Background:

The Blue Coat School founded in 1829 by Thomas Henshaw, and was a part of the Anglican Church's great mission to the industrial towns in the nineteenth century. Originally the school provided education for boys in the parish, often orphans. It taught them a trade, and their catechism. The original magnificent neo-gothic building remains in the centre of the school, a new sixth form common room with new science laboratories, a new learning resource centre, an IT building, a new sports hall, a new restaurant, social areas for students and a new block of modern classrooms. The school has a medium and long accommodation plan and is currently focussing on the replacement of the design-technology, art building, an increase in seminar rooms and social space for the increasing sixth form. The school aims to prepare young people for life by developing skills, knowledge, thinking, creativity, confidence and independence.
