Background:
The school was opened in 1972 to serve the parish of St Wilfrid and is housed in a one-storey building in Ashton-in-Makerfield, to the south of Wigan. It 'aims to provide a rich, stimulating and encouraging environment where children can develop, grow and learn' and is 'particularly well-known' for its musical productions and choral singing. There is a playing field on site, allowing children to benefit from athletics in the summer months and oudoor games and cross-country running throughout the winter. Children with special educational needs (SEN) receive individual or small group tuition from class teachers where necessary, and specialist courses of action are devised in conjunction with the SEN co-ordinator. The children and their parents are 'very generous' in raising funds for charities. Fund-raising for the school itself is undertaken by a mixed group of parents and friends of the school.
