Background:

The present school was founded after the amalgamation in 1987 of St Peter's and St Joseph's RC High Schools. Situated north of Manchester city centre, St Monica's is continuing the tradition of serving the Catholic community south of Bury, drawing pupils equally from urban and residential areas of Manchester and Salford. Over-subscribed, with 1.25 applications per place. An extensive building and refurbishment programme has recently created a new classroom block. Staff emphasise the choice and breadth in the curriculum, with 27 different subjects studied in Years 10 and 11. Attention is given to any pupils with special needs, including those who are particularly able. Pupils in the choir and orchestra are 'very strong' in public music performance, and there are up to five drama productions every year. Public speaking is another extra-curricular strength. The school participates in inter-school tournaments in several sports, finding particular success in table tennis, athletics and cross-country. 'Jesus Christ is central to our school. Our vocation is the cultivation of human values originating in Christ, so that pupils may grow in faith through prayer and service'.
