Background:

Education in Standish goes back to 1829 but first Catholic day school started in 1865; main room of senior school built in 1869, shortly followed by infant school. Both schools arged and provided education until the 1960s when, damaged by mining subsidence, they were replaced by the current building; two further classrooms and art area added in 1979. Facilities include playground and large playing field, and school shares a swimming pool with neighbouring school. Sports offered include soccer, rugby, netball, cross-country, athletics and rounders. Links with local junior rugby league and soccer clubs. Some former pupils have represented the county; one has been capped by the the England under-15 rugby league team. Range of extra curricular activities: piano, violin, keyboard, recorder, cello, choir, running, keep fit, ocarina, guitar and coaching in soccer and rugby. Educational day visits and, in Years 5 and 6, residential visits. A before- and after-school club is available at a fee. Pupils encouraged to support charities such as Liverpool Archdiocese School Fund, The Nugent Care Society, The Holy Childhood and CAFOD. Strong links with local community through cultural, academic and work exchanges; parish works closely with the school. The Friends of St Marie's School Association is open to all who wish to support the school.
