Background:

Opened in 1979, Woodhey High is a custom-built six-form entry comprehensive school in a semi-rural area on edge of Ramsbottom town. It occupies three blocks of buildings, including a sports hall, and there are seven laboratories, two of which are recent additions. A new library and information technology resources centre opened in 1994, and the sports fields were recently renovated. In addition the school has specialist language and music suites, well-equipped ICT rooms and a hall. The school prides itself on its examination results, the quality of its teaching staff and the smart appearance of pupils. Laptop computers are available for use in all subjects. Overseas visits are organised to Switzerland, Austria, Italy, France and Spain and clubs include drama, photography, meteorology, aerobics, electronic music, school choir, chamber choir and band and guitar playing for beginners. There is an annual theatrical production, and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is offered. The main sports offered include soccer, rugby, basketball, netball, badminton, hockey, cross-country, athletics and cricket. The school has achieved Schools' Curriculum Award (1987) and Investor in People status. The school is committed to providing a secure and caring learning environment. It aims to develop well-rounded, considerate and confident young people.
