Background:
Completed in 1898, Withnell Fold is a typical Victorian single story village school in a rural area near the town of Chorley. A new extension was completed in September 1999 to provide new toilets, staffroom and purpose-built infant classroom. This has enabled four class units: Reception and Year 1, Year 2, Year 3/4 and Year 5/6. The school describes itself as the 'heart of the community'. It provides a 'balanced and broad' curriculum and believes in providing learning opportunities through visits and visiting speakers. Although there is no hall, sport and music are considered important and pupils participate in both for enjoyment and competition. The shool is proud of its charitable activities in which it is engaged on local, national and international levels. It aims to ensure the 'security, welfare and continued care of our pupils and to develop their community spirit, social, moral and cultural awareness'. The school was awarded Beacon status in 2000 and an Award of Excellence in 2001. It has also gained the Basic Skills Quality Mark.
