Background:
St Michael's Church of England Primary School was established at Gnat Bank, on outer edge of Rochdale, in 1854 to serve the children of mill-workers. The church took over the responsibility and built a new school on the present site in 1874 which acted as both a school and church, until a separate church opened in 1885. There were extensive alterations in 1970, including the addition of two new classrooms and an administrative block. There were further extensions in 1992, providing accommodation for seven classes as well as increased administrative area. French taught in after-school club; sports coaching available. The nearby local authority playing field is used for a range of sporting activities. Music tuition offered; choir, brass band, and guitar groups. Privately-managed before- and after-school clubs on site. Strong links with St Michael's Church; school premises used by church organisations for church functions. Involvement in local musical and sporting events. Regular charity fundraising for local and wider communities. Active parent-teacher association. Use of acclerated learning approaches. Over-subscribed, with 1.1 applications per place. Before-school care, from 7.45am; after-school care, until 6pm. Healthy School award (2005). DfES achievement awards (2002, 2003). Ethos: 'Rooted soundly in Christian values; to develop all children to their full potential; to achieve the highest possible standards in all aspects of school life; to develop independence and confidence; to understand responsibilities and respect others'.
