Background:
Opened in 1954, the school serves six parishes in the northern half of Bury. It is part of an educational complex with four neighbouring secondary schools. Its buildings provide 'good' facilities, and it offers 'extensive' playing fields. The school is over-subscribed, with an average of 1.5 applications for each place, and many staff have children at the school. Facilities include a new resource centre to update learning and research facilities. The school's philosophy is one of 'wholeness in developing all aspects of each pupil' and it expects 'high standards across the whole curriculum' although it 'does not see the need to set one pupil against another in competition to achieve this'. St Gabriel's 'emphasises Gospel values'. It has 'excellent relations with a good and responsive local education authority' and a 'strong and supportive' parent-teacher association.
