Background:
The school'stands on a site first occupied by Rivington Grammar, which was founded in 1566 by James Pilkington, the Bishop of Durham. The present school is stone built and dates from 1714. It is owned by the Shaws Education Endowment and became grant-aided in 1951. The school is set in 'beautiful' countryside and is a 'regular winner' in the best-kept school and grounds competition. It has also distinguished itself in music, winning the Rotary International Youth Presents Music Competition in 1998, and the school choir gave a performance on Grampian Television in 1999. It is now a school a school for boys and girls aged three to 11 situated in Rivington, Bolton. On entry pupils' attainment is broadly average and the school serves a wide area. The number of pupils with special educational needs is below the national average. A new foundation stage classroom is due to be completed in November, the school has a new library and use is made of the Church hall for PE and drama. The playing field is located 300 metres from the school. Use can also be made of the delightful school grounds. Educational standards are high. Test results for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 in 2004 were 100 per cent in all subjects with outcomes at level three and level five being well above the national average. The school aims to provide a stimulating learning environment in which children are seen as individuals and are given the opportunity to develop their full potential in all aspects of school life. It also aims to take advantage of the special environment in which the school is situated.
