Background:

West End is a community primary school, which offers an education to children aged from four to 11 years. The school's original building was built in 1914, and there have been three further stages of building since. The school is situated on the outskirts of Oswaldtwistle with a catchments area of private and council owned properties ranging from rented terraced to large detached houses, and has a wide social mix. An entrance hall was added in 1984 and in January 2003 a classroom was converted into a computer suite holding 15 computers. There is a playing field attached to the school and there are two playgrounds. The school organises educational trips for each class at least yearly, and invites local businesses to visit the school to speak to pupils, such as a dentist, the police force and the fire brigade. The school enters local competitions for Hyndburn, for example home safety, cross-country, football, netball and athletics. The school has a choir, recorder club and guitar club. The football team often wins the league or are runners up. The school has a harvest festival and Year 6 pupils deliver approximately 70 parcels to the elderly in the area. Pupils are encouraged to support a charity, and the school has a flourishing Parents' Association, which works hard to raise money for local funds. The school aims to provide a secure and caring environment conducive to learning and the enjoyment of work and leisure.
