The original Newburgh School, sited on Course Lane, was founded in 1714 by Thomas Crane. The school was moved to the oldest part of the present building in 1860 and 1890. Two new classrooms were added in 1955 and a hall and kitchen were added in 1969. The last phase of building, completed in 1974 added two open-plan classrooms and a resource area.Newburgh is a Voluntary Aided Church of England School which means that the building has been provided by the Church. The Governors continue to maintain the external fabric. It is a co-educational Day School which offers a Primary Education to children in the 'rising 5' to eleven age group. This is a Church of England School and the Religious Education it provides is in conformity with the titles, practices and doctrines of the Church of England. The syllabus used is authorised by the Liverpool Diocesan Board of Education.Physical Education and Games lessons take place in the Hall, on the playground and on the school playing field. Children from the Junior department also have weekly swimming lessons at one of the pools in Ormskirk. In recent years the school has won the inter-schools netball league and swimming trophy and came second in the football league. Older children regularly entertain local senior citizens, singing, dancing and playing instruments, and take part in church services. The children also enjoy supporting fundraising events for charities such as NSPCC, Jeans for Genes, Children in Need, NCH Action for Children and RNIB. The schools aim is to provide a good all-round education in a caring, Christian environment in which each individual is valued and respected so that all are enabled to reach their full potential.
