Background:

This over-subscribed, 'thriving, modern community school' is situated in its own 'extensive' playing fields in a semi-urban area of Nelson. The school has recently gone through 'significant changes', including greatly increasing numbers, and it has a commitment to maintain small classes, particularly in Reception. A large number of pupils have special educational needs, and the deputy headteacher coordinates individual programmes for them. Extra-curricular activities include country dancing, cricket, football, recorders, guitars and gymnastics. All pupils perform in concerts for parents throughout the year. Pupils in Year 4 and above can participate in two adventure holidays. A 'long tradition' of 'excellent' support from the parent-teacher association continues to fund extra resources and to provide a 'rich community' within the school. The school aims to provide a 'caring, positive and stimulating environment and to promote high academic standards'. 'We trust that young people leaving our care do so well equppied to benefit fully from their continuing education'.
