Background:

Hoole St Michael has gone through 'various stages of change' since it first opened in 1850, the last major refurbishment and additions to the building having been in 1995. The school is set in a 'pleasant' area and the buildings are 'functional and well maintained'. Its 'strong' ethos is based on 'roots and wings'. It considers basic skills (roots) to be of great importance, but also 'recognises the need to lead pupils towards autonomy and wisdom'. This 'equips pupils to make the right use of their knowledge'. The school aims to offer a curriculum which is 'broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated'. The school offers some after-school activities, as well as taking pupils on educational visits to local sites of interest, and further a field. Older pupils are given the opportunity to go on a residential venture week. The school aims to be 'caring and effective', where children and adults 'work to thir full potential'. There is an 'active' friends association which organises social and fund-raising events throughout the year, and parents are supportive of the school. 'Close links' with the community and church are encouraged, and the school facilities are already used by several organisations out of school hours. The school is also a member of Wrist (West of the Ribble In-Service Training) Schools, a cluster of 15 schools in the area, who meet regularly to discuss ideas and to 'prevent themselves from becoming isolated'.
