Background:

Healey Primary opened in 1977 and is accommodated in a single storey building. Extra classrooms were added in the late 1980's and another is about to be added to create more space for the infants. The school is in a 'very rural' setting on the edge of moorland, and is 'well known' for its environmental work. In 1985, the school won the Kodak conservation award for saving a community of frogs. The school aims to provide all children with a 'happy and secure environment' in which they can 'reach their individual potential', and to 'equip then with the relevavant skills, knowledge and attitudes to progress to the next stage of their educational life'. Pupils make educational visits to museums, parks, buildings and theatres as part of their school work. The school offers a 'wide variety' of extra-curricular activities run by staff, non-teaching staff, parents and friends of the school. These range from a dance group, choir, recorder group, rugby, football, netball and gymnastics to rounders training. The school also offers after- and before-school care for working parents. In 1998, the school was awarded a bronze healthy school award, and is now working towards the silver level. The school has 'good' community links with pupils encouraged to visit homes for the elderly at Christmas and Easter to sing and play music. The school has a 'thriving' Parent-Teacher Association which organises social and fundraising events throughout the year. It is also proud of 'an outstanding charity record'.
