Background:

St Hilda's RC High a specialist humanities college was opened in 1954 in the residential area of Burnley, this is one of two single-sex Roman Catholic schools in Burnley. It draws pupils from Burnley, Padiham and Todmorden. The buildings are extremely well cared for with an annual upgrading programme, and technology facilities are 'superb'. German is offered from Year 8 for the most linguistically able. The sporting life of the school 'flourishes' with many local successes in hockey, netball, football, gymnastics and athletics. Music and drama also enjoy 'great success'. There is a musical production every two years and the school recently staged 'Half a Sixpence'. It also raises substantial amounts for charity every year. 'There are excellent relationships and very good attitudes to work with an emphasis on care for pupils' personal development within this Catholic environment.' This school has a caring atmosphere with a derive for excellence.
