Background:

Originally founded in 1878, the school moved to a new site opposite the old one in 1972. The rural school enjoys good reputation within the community. Numbers have recently grown and pupils are now drawn not only from the catchment area of Forton, Bay Horse and Cabus, but from villages farther afield. The most attractive feature of its setting is the wooded dell in front of the school, converted from a pond and the winner of an environmental award. The building offers four classrooms, a library and a hall, and there is also a spacious playing field; new ICT suite and early-years play area. Teaching is either in whole classes, small groups or individually, and to meet each child's needs they are sometimes grouped by ability. The governors have decided that sex education will be included in the curriculum. The working atmosphere is 'happy and enjoyable' and there are close links with the community and parents. After-school clubs are offered in skittleball and football, and two weekly swimming sessions are available. Year 5 pupils take part in five-day culutural and historical residential visit to London. Year 6 pupils participate in a five-day outdoor and adventure-activity visit to the Isle of Man. After-school care, until 6pm. DfES achievement award (2002, 2003).
