Background:
Founded close to the southern edge of Darwen in 1857 as St John's School, it opened as an infant and junior school in a new location with a growing population in 1965. Its name was changed to St Peter's in 1983 to recognise the link between the school and the church. Further extensions in 1994 created a new library and office. Within the grounds, a 'large' outdoor classroom has been built for stories, discussions and singing. The school is currently over-subscribed, with about 1.5 applications for every place, and there are plans to create more classrooms over the next few years. They school is proud of the 'high quality' of its choir, which is frequently asked to perform in many venues including the local cathedral. Some children can also learn a brass or woodwind instrument. Sporting teams have also found success, with the 1998 girls' swimming team competing at national level. Year 6 pupils can participate in an outdoor pursuits residential weekend. Throughout the school, Christian values instil pupils with 'spiritual joy and strength'.
