Background:
Founded in 1971 and granted Beacon School status in 2000, this one-form entry community school is situated about four miles north of Chorley in Clayton-le-Woods, a village which has undergone 'tremendous growth' in recent years. The school offers 10 'modern teaching bases' which provide 'excellent' facilities for its eight classes, a multi-purpose hall used for worship, PE and dining, and a 'well-stocked' library. Outdoor facilities include a hard play area equipped with seating areas and 'extensive' grounds with sports pitches, a pond and wildlife areas. The school has a 'strong' academic record, a 'recognised reputation' for pastoral care and a rich variety of extra-curricular activities based on the interests and strengths of staff. Clubs include art, French and gardening, and the children's playing of musical instruments 'has always given much pleasure in the school'. A wide range of sporting activites is on offer, including school fields teams in badminton, cross country, football, skittleball, cricket, athletics, a local multi-sport competition and swimming, and this year the rounders team won the local league for the fourth time running. The school takes part in a variety of parish council events and its community links have been recognised by the DfEE. The school is proud of its charity fund-raising and raised nearly #600 for the RNIB this year. Other causes helped in recent years have included NSPCC, Comic Relief, Children in Need, Marie Curie and Derian House, a local children's hospice. The school's stated aim is 'to create a happy school environment' in which to 'provide a balanced preparation for life according to each child's abilities and aptitudes'.
