Background:

Built in 1964 and expanded in 1969, 1972 and 1973; major four-classroom extension with resource areas completed in 1999; further additional classroom built in 2001. There are 12 classrooms, a large multi-purpose hall, a computer suite with 16 computers linked to internet, group teaching rooms and a library area. Next to recently-extended playground is large school field used for variety of sporting activities. The school neighbours agricultural land, on edge of large village of Aughton, which is near Ormskirk. Also has a privately-run nursery on site catering for the needs of three- and four-year-olds. School proud of academic achievement; also places emphasis on all aspects of education; acknowledged excellence in music, with many children playing woodwind, string or brass instruments; groups participate in local competitive music festivals. Many pupils have won individual awards in art competitions linked to fire safety projects and health promotion; also awards in the Lancashire environmental ideas and in the county-run library quiz. Range of sporting opportunities and swimming; success is local competitions. 'The care of pupils in the school is specifically noted in relation to the schools proven record in special educational needs.' Extra-curricular activities: pottery, art, young journalists club, needlework, football, netball, ecology, school orchestra, instrumental music. An active Parent-Teacher Friends Association encourages community links, as does recent environmentaal work linked to council anti-litter campaign; charity support encouraged for both local and national charities.
