Background:
Originates from school founded by John Kershaw in 1701; later moved to better premises in Newchurch, across Rossendale valley, where string of small Victorian textile towns and villages are surrounded by moorland; by end of 19th century Newchurch Grammar, as then known, had established sound reputation and teachers from school formed the nucleus of Bacup and Rawtenstall School when it opened on its current site in Waterfoot in 1913. Has had only six headteachers since then. Became grant-maintained in 1989; specialist technology college status from 1994; became foundation school in 1999. Four new classrooms and all-weather pitch constructed in recent years; technology and computer rooms refurbished in 2002; theatre now hired for drama; new sports hall in 2005; sixth-form common rooms and private study facilities in 2007. Teams have been national netball and orienteering champions, with national representatives in jujitsu, judo, ice hockey, karting and kickboxing. Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme available; strong music tradition. Staff teach science, mathematics and technology in seven local primary schools and local primary classes use school's information technology facilities. Partnership with local comprehensive to offer ICT evening classes and video-conferencing lessons.
