Background:

Pleckgate High School was built in 1967 on the outskirts of Blackburn, the school is 'pleasantly situated' on a small rise, in large landscaped grounds. It is housed in a mixture of large main school blocks and annexes, with recent upgrading resulting in a new library, dining hall and increased information and communication technology facilities. The school'serves a broad spectrum of families from pupils in the inner city to suburban dwellers. Because about half of pupils speak English as a foreign language, much work is done on raising attainment. The school has excellent outdoor sporting facilities: four football pitches, a cricket square, five netball courts, seven tennis courts plus access to two sand pitches. The department staff also organise successful concerts and run the choir, orchestra and recorder groups. A number of departments reach very high standards, notably mathematics, art, media studies, ICT and music. Extra curricular activities include sports, drama, music and the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme. Pleckgate pupils have the right to a school system that helps them understand the society in which they live.
