Background:

Leigh Central is located in an ex-grammar school building with 'large, well-used teaching facilities', very close to Leigh town centre, with most of its pupils being drawn from the immediate locality. The school has a centre of good practice for early years education, is 'centrally involved' in various Action Zone projects and has 'achieved a huge percentage increase' in its Year 6 Sat's results. The school is proud of its grounds, for which it is a Beacon of Excellence, has won several large grants and a Tetra Pack certificate of recognition, and is aiming to achieve the Green Flag. The grounds include a 'wide variety of environmentally stimulating areas' including large gardens, shrubs and trees, a playground, secret garden and starter group play area. The school offers a variety of 'well-attended' extra-curricular activities including maths club, nature club, football, netball, aerobics and roller hockey. The school raises funds for charities such as Oxfam every year and has extended its community links to include local retailers Wigan Groundwork Trust, Asda, RailTrack and Leigh Constabulary.
