Background:

Opened in 1907, the large urban school occupies a split site, which was extensively renovated and refurbished in 1990. It offers 15 classrooms, a special educational needs area, two halls, a kitchen, dining room, two playgrounds, a 52-place nursery with play area, gardens and car park and an extensive, well-stocked environmental site with a fenced pond. A new reception and administration extension is currently being built. There is also a large playing field on which is a new half-million pounds sport and arts centre. This is used by the local community as well as the school, which has benefited from investment of £1.7 million in the last 10 years. The school is proud of its strong sporting tradition and offers mixed soccer, tag rugby, baseball, athletics, hockey, cricket, cross-country running, triathlon, diathlon, rounders, high fives netball, skittleball and swimming. A wide range of educational visits enrich the curriculum and include visits to Bolton Museum and Art Gallery, the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, Jodrell Bank, Preston Construction Centre, the Lancashire Evening Post, Ribchester, Cuerden Valley Park and visits from theatre companies. Strong community links are maintained with local schools and Church youth groups while The Friends of Roebuck generates significant funds for the school. Children also raise funds for charities, particularly charities for the blind and local children. The school is committed to acknowledging the unique value of individuals and a philosophy of continuous improvements of every aspect of school life. In 2004 remodelling within the school will result in the creation of a special needs centre, school library, new foundation stage facilities and new staff room.
