Background:

Elmers Green was built in the late 1960's on the outskirts of the new town of Skelmersdale and draws pupils mainly from an estate developed about 20 years ago. The original school building was destroyed by fire in 1989 and has since been rebuilt. In addition to the 'beautiful' new building there are two playgrounds and a large playing field, and a country park is situated behind the school. Elmers Green is in an area of high depravation and many children have emotional and behavioural difficulties. Extra-curricular activities are provided for the children and may include art, chess, dance, football, netball, rounders, recorders and science club. The school takes part in all local sporting activities and children have the opportunity to participate in two annually residential visits. 'Strong' links have been established with Hedge Hill college of higher education, with which Elmers Green is a partner school. 'Our philosophy is simple: we wish to promote a happy, stimulating and aesthetically pleasing environment where constructive teaching and learning can take place'.
