Background:

The original school was built in 1871 in Orrell Lane and was intended to accommodate around 200 children. The school was built of brick, with wooden floors and a slate roof and these features can still be seen today in the building housing the office, hall and library. Over the years additional buildings were added as the roll grew and it became a primary school. Burscough Methodist School is now a co-educational day school offering primary education to children between the ages of five and 11 and as a voluntary controlled Methodist School and therefore maintains close links with the Methodist Church, with which it shares the same site. Children are encouraged to participate in a variety of clubs organised on a voluntary basis by members of staff and/or parents, catering for many interests. These are at present: football, tag rugby, netball, computer, choir and recorders. It regularly invites charities into school for whom it raises money. The school aims to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that meets the specific needs of individual and also aims to provide equal opportunities for all children regardless of gender, race or religion. The school aims to encourage all members of the school community to develop to their full potential intellectually, socially, morally, aesthetically, physically and spiritually within the context of Christian community.
