Background:

Opened in 1964, the school was re-organised in 1972 to take six forms of entry covering the whole ability range. Its intake is a mix of rural and urban children. It occupies buildings in 'well-maintained' grounds in a residential area and facilities include three computer suites, a sports hall, gymnasium, seven science laboratories, music suite, a range of design and technology rooms and a 'fine' library. 'Significant' development of the hall, dining room and science and technology areas took place in 1993. The school is over-subscribed, with 1.2 applications per place. Music and drama are 'very strong', with regular productions involving very large numbers of pupils, in addition to many choirs, orchestras and wind bands. The school has a 'tradition of outdoor education' and offers a residential week for all Year 9 pupils. Learning support is available for the very able as well as those with difficulties, and there is a strong pastoral care system. 'The value of every individual in the sight of God is kept in mind in all the school's work. Visitors frequently comment on the warmth of relationships and the purposeful, friendly atmosphere of the school.' St Michael's achieved the Schools Curriculum Award in 1997.
