Background:

St Joseph's was founded by parishioners in 1875. The present school building was opened in 1972 on an elongated site within its own secure and landscaped gardens. The school is situated within the old mill town of Shaw in a semi-rural location in the foothills of the Pennines. Parents can pay for additional tuition in French, brass instruments and guitar. The school is proud of the number of trophies it has collected in rugby, football, netball, swimming, cross-country, cricket and chess. It offers an impressive extra-curricular programme, which includes netball, football, cricket, rounder, dance, gardening, chess, football, cross-country, recorder and drama. The school is highly regarded in the community where school carries out prominent work in addition to supporting local and international charities. There is an active parent-teacher association that has raised more than £11000 in a year.
