Background:

The school is situated in St Mary's in Leyland, a small, light-industrial town in Lancashire and a Benedictine parish served by the monks of Ampleforth Abbey in North Yorkshire. When the school celebrated its 40th anniversary in 1997, the former Abbot of Ampleforth, Cardinal Basil Hulme, visited the school as part of the celebrations. The school became comprehensive in the 1970s and caters mainly for the Catholic population of Leyland and the surrounding area. The school became a technology college in 1996 and it aims to continue to 'develop a technological ethos and culture throughout the school with a particular emphasis on high standards in mathematics, science and technology'. Thanks mainly to a grant from the foundation for sports and arts and lottery funding, the school has an artificial floodlit all-weather pitch, which is also used by the local community every evening in a scheme established with the local authority. The school, which is oversubscribed, is proud to have been awarded a Charter Mark and Investors in People. It aims to 'educate pupils in a Catholic, Christian way that ensures each one is valued and cared for and achieves the best of which he/she is capable'.
