Background:

In existence by 1235 and endowed by John Gardyner in 1472, one of the oldest maintained schools in the country; received royal charter in middle of 19th century, when it moved to current site overlooking city of Lancaster and Morecambe Bay, with views to Lake District and Pennines. Specialist technology college status from 1995, re-awarded in 2000; also specialist language college status; became voluntary aided in 1999. Pupils include 160 boarders in three houses; new boarding house to replace school house in 2007. Recent building has improved facilities for mathematics (1993), English and drama (1994), and design and technology (1995); new science centre added in 1999 and international business centre in 2000; new boarding house opened in September 2001 to accommodate 60 first- and second-year boarders. Sports hall, swimming pool, library, and technology and information technology centres. Mathematics, science and technology are academic strengths; drama and music flourish. National representatives in cricket, rugby, rowing, swimming, athletics and water polo; cricket team won 2001 national championship at Trent Bridge; coxless pair won silver medal at 1999 national rowing championships; former pupils selected for England rugby sevens and senior England squads. Combined Cadet Force optional; Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme; many outdoor pursuits flourish, including water sports and activities on mountains and fells. Among the first schools to be accredited as international school by Central Bureau in 1998; maintains links with France, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Romania and Poland, among others. 'The welfare of boys is supported by strong pastoral care, based on mutual respect and mature responsibility. Discipline and self-discipline are strongly promoted - but there is a lot of fun too!' Out-of-school activities include rugby, cricket, rowing, swimming, athletics, cross-country, squash, tennis and badminton. Over-subscribed, with three applications per place. Artsmark Silver (2001); Sportsmark; Sportsmark Gold (1997, 2000, 2006); Investor in People status.
