Background:

St Joseph's is a Roman Catholic Aided School. The present building was opened in 1969 and replaced the old school building (1880's) next to the church which was used for parish activities and houses a nursery school. There are currently five classrooms areas in use, with 'large' resource areas in both the infant and junior departments. These are used for a variety of practical activities relating to the curriculum, or for children to work quietly alone, in groups or with a member of staff. The school has recently built a new central library which will serve the needs of both the junior and and infant departments, in addition to which all classes have a small library of their own. The junior resource area has been developed into a computer suite, which is large enough for a whole class to do computer work at the same time. There is also a separate audio-visual room and the hall is used 'extensively' for PE and drama etc. The school is surrounded by 'excellent playing fields which are well used'. Facilities include football and cricket pitches, a running track, and a rounders court. The school takes part in all district sporting activities with 'much success', has 'good links' with the local community and is involved with many fund-raising activities.
