Background:

The school was founded in 1717 using money willed by James Baines, a Poulton draper, and is situated in Thornton in an area of mainly owner occupied housing. The Baines Trust administers funds which are made available to the school and, for example, these have been used to provide music scholarships and extensions to classrooms. There are seven main classrooms, a hall, music room, areas for group activities and special needs, two library areas and playing field areas. There also is a soft play area for younger pupils, and the school maintains a pond and wild life area. The school has built a 'strong' curriculum base to ensure that pupils achieve 'high standards'. Its 'strength lies in the way all staff work together to continue developing the curriculum'. There is a 'range of extra-curricular activities' with a 'particular emphasis' on music tuition. Brass, woodwind, keyboard, strings, and recorder tuition are all made available to the pupils. Football, cricket, running, netball and rugby are sports made available to pupils. The school has 'very strong links' with parents, some of whom help in the classroom. JB's Club and Earlybirds Club provide care facilities for pupils to enable their parents to continue working.
