Background:
The school has occupied its present site since 1888 and the hall and one of the classrooms are still housed in the original building. The rest of the school building is about 25 years old. 'Pleasant grounds' surround the school and a pond and conservation area were created in 1996. There is also a 'large' playing field adjacent to the school. The school'serves the local community of Read but more than half the intake lives outside the catchment area. The school places emphasis on 'educating the whole child' and promotes the 'highest standards in all aspects of school life, work and behaviour'. Current extra-curricular activities are choir, recorder groups, football, netball, book club, line dancing, disco dancing, and short tennis. The school takes a full part in all the Ribble Valley sporting activities, such as the football league, netball league, where the school was runner-up in 1999, cricket and rounders tournaments and the cross country championships where the boys team was runner-up in 1999. The school holds a major charity event each year as well as supporting one-off charity days. The school also has a partner school in Anderson, South Carolina in the USA.
