Background:

Original schools dates back to 1860; has been housed in its present building since 1937; several extensions have since been added; serves families from the local vilages and surrounding areas. Extensive grounds and a playing field with special conservation areas, including a fenced natural pond. Broad and balanced curriculum based on core subjects of national curriculum. Curricular aims are 'for pupils to appreciate the varied nature of human achievement which will help them to understand themselves and the world in which they live'. Strong community links; annual community links assembly. Links include Deafway, the local Lancashire police, civic dignitaries, local clergy, the heads of high schools. The school'seeks to establish and foster links with local businesses. Year 6 holds an annual Easter Fair to part-fund residential outdoor pursuits holiday, where they engage in abseiling, rock-climbing and canoeing. An artist in residence is an annual project. Pupils have created a 'secret garden'; other extra-curricular activities include chess, table tennis, football, skittle ball, choir and classical guitar. The school'skittleball team are local and district champions. The school choir and the classical guitar group both came second in the Penwortham Music Festival; the school has produced a tape of their singing and classical guitars featuring original compositions. Pupils were district finalists in the local library quiz and are featured on local radio for Deaf Awareness. Educational visits are a feature of school life, and the school also has a design link with British Aerospace.
