Background:
Opened in 1977 in rural surroundings, the school attracts pupils from throughout Rochdale. The over-subscribed school includes 38 physically disabled and two visually-impaired children. Its sixth-form opened in September 1996. It has an 'avowedly non-political governing body', has had the same chairman of the governors for 20 years and 'became grant-maintained for greater independence rather than financial gain'. It offers a total of 260 clubs which meet each week, teams for all main sports and some pupils play for the Rochdale schools soccer team. Music is an 'outstanding feature' and the school's brass and woodwind bands have performed at the National Festival of Music for Youth nine times, given four school proms performances and a royal command performance in front of Princess Margaret. The school has been the national junior brass band champion four times.
