Background:
Founded in 1588 by Sir Robert Byrchall, the school was known as Ashton Grammar School until 1978, when it became a comprehensive. It is housed in modern, purpose-built buildings on an attractive wooded site on the outskirts of a small market town, opposite Haydock Park racecourse. It has excellent facilities for technology and has invested heavily in computer technology over the last four years. It also offers fine sporting facilities and soccer is particularly successful, the school having won the Greater Manchester Cup. It is committed to excellence, with particularly outstanding science and English GCSE results. Pupils are encouraged to take a pride in the school and respect its longstanding history and traditions. High academic demands are made on all pupils. The school aims to help pupils to appreciate human achievements and aspirations; to help pupils to develop self-esteem together with self-confidence in action and judgement.
