Background:

Whitefield Primary School was built in 1969. The school occupies a 'large site with modern building surrounded by extensive playing fields'. The buildings were extended in 1995 by three classrooms. The reception pupils are taught in a separate Early Years Unit adjacent to the main building. The area which the school serves is essentially one of modern private housing. The school is 'popular' and takes from a catchment area which is beyond its immediate locality. The school is 'supported srongly' by parents and by the friends of the school. The school offers a 'wide range' of extra curricular activities which include country dancing, maypole dancing, badminton, gymnastics, drama, construction club, football, netball, rounders, cricket, athletics, recorders, orchestra and chess. Last year the school won the footbal league, the girls team were cross country winners, pupils won four swimming trophies and the school was runner up in the netball tournament. The school has 'several community links' with the cubs and brownies using the school as well as local football teams. Pupils go out into the community for the harvest festival. The school'supports a variety of charity fund raising organisations, locally, nationally and internationally.
