Background:

Longton County Primary School serves a semi-rural village to the south of Preston. 'Conveniently' situated near the M6 and M55 motorways, Longton and its environs is a popular commuting area for Manchester and Liverpool as well as for the towns of Preston, Blackburn and Southport. The village consists of a mixture of older properties and modern executive housing. The school has a long history dating originally to the middle of the 19th Century, but is now housed in a modern single storey building. Phase one opened in 1971, and a new infant block was added in 1994. The accommodation contains 11 class bases and adjacent resource areas and the school also benefits from a central library and resources room. Outside there are 'extensive' playing fields, three play courts and two car parks. The school has a 'long tradition' of parents helping in school, they contribute to activities such as cooking, display, reading, maths and computers. Specialist music teachers give weekly tuition on guitar, cello, violin, brass and woodwind. Parents also provide a valued input with school visits and school teams. All younger children are actively involved with a home link reading project. During the year the school is used by the Brownies, Yoga classes are held and Longton Community Church meets in school every Sunday morning. 'The governors feel that the school has always emanated a warm, caring atmosphere where every child is treated as an individual, able to develop to their full potential'.
