Background:

Since it opened in 1932 the school has been extensively redeveloped, including a major building programme in 1997 and 1998. It serves the towns of Poulton-le-Fylde, Thornton Cleveleys and the surrounding Wyre villages. The school is set in 'pleasant' grounds providing access to 'excellent' sporting facilities. A 'rich and varied extra-curricular programme supports a very broad curriculum'. Pupils regularly compete at county and national levels in sports, and the school holds a Sportsmark for high standards in physical education. Music and drama are 'exceptionally strong'. There are two school bands, an orchestra and a choir, and one of the bands took part in BBC Music Live in 2000. Pupils maintain numerous contacts with Europe and participate in exchanges with schools in Germany, France and Ukraine. Hodgson High was designated a specialist technology college in 1996 and again in 1999. It achieved Investors in People accreditation for the third time in 2001 and received the Charter Mark for excellence in 1999. It also holds a Basic Skills Agency mark. 'Aiming for excellence for each individual in a technologically advanced environment.' The school is over-subscribed, receiving 1.8 applications for each place.
