Background:
Established as sixth form college in 1978; single site on outskirts of Wigan; A-level specialist college. Wide range of enrichment activities: sport, music, drama, foreign visits, debates, and student politics. Learning Resource Centre open 8.45am-4.45pm: 20,000 books on two floors. College has total of more than 600 networked computers. Student Council; entertainment includes Leaver's Ball; raising money for local and national charities; Amnesty International. Extensive programme of performing arts. Success in sports at county and national level, including golf, badminton, hockey, netball, rugby league and rugby union, football. Curriculum-related visits to Australia, New York, Germany, France and Spain. Over-subscribed, with two applications per place. Beacon status (2001, 2006); Investor in People status (1994, 2006).
