Background:
Established in September 1991, this large, over-subscribed school occupies 'magnificent' buildings with full disabled access that were opened by the then Secretary of State for Education, Kenneth Clark. Facilities include a 'large' library, an all weather games area, and a courtyard with greenhouse and pond. A 'strong sporting ethos' pervades the school and pupils consistently find success in local football and netball tournaments. An 'important element' of the curriculum is educational visits, which include a residential activity week for Year 6. Extra-curricular activities offered include violin, woodwind and brass tuition, and French lessons for Year 6 pupils. Parents are encouraged to become actively involved in school life and the Friends of Westgate School organise social events for families. Links with local churches mean that a church member conducts one assembly every week. The school'supports a charity each year. 'Curiosity and enthusiasm for learning are fostered in our children'.
