Background:

Lancaster Road Primary first opened as a boys and girls junior and infant school in 1932. It is 'well known and respected' in the locality, and many of the parents were pupils themselves when they were children. There is also a nursery, which is operated and managed by the school, is well resourced and benefits from its own secure outdoor play area. The school is 'very well equipped' and has bright, colourful classrooms. Most classes have a separate resource area. There is a 'large' library, 'huge' playing fields and 'many' garden areas. This year the school has developed an orienteering course within the school grounds. Each class teacher has the help of a trained, non-teaching assistant and a large number of parents come into school to help in classes. In recent years a 'great deal' of investment has gone into ensuring that the curriculum is well resourced. In information and communications technology (ICT), for example, all classes benefit from at least one multimedia computer, many classes have more than one, and both Year 6 classes have their own bay with four computers in each. All classes are linked to the internet and have been operating e-mail since November 1998. The school offers a 'wide variety' of extra-curricular activities which in addition to sport include orienteering, music, computers and chess. Pupils are also taken on two residential visits each year. The school holds fundraising events throghout the year.
