Background:

Located in a well-established and well-regarded residential area, West End opened as an infant and nursery school in 1931. The nursery department remains housed in the original building but a separate junior school was built to accommodate growing numbers in 1961. The two schools amalgamated in 1978 and were joined as a result of building extensions in 1996. The school is well-resourced and its environment is 'continually being improved to make it more attractive and welcoming'. The nursery provides a 'safe and secure' environment with access to an enclosed outer play area and garden. There are six infant and nine junior classes. Each department has its own assembly hall for collective worship, PE and dining. There are also two libraries and an established computer suite, with a second under construction. Facilities include extensive playground areas, playing fields and an environmental area. The school aims to ensure that children have the opportunity to play as many sports as possible including swimming for some junior pupils. After-school care is provided for 25 pupils aged 4 to 11 from 3.15pm to 5.30pm, when activities might include chess, computers, country dancing, French, recorder, Spanish, science, choir, football, netball, tag rugby, basketball, athletics, short tennis, volleyball, cricket and cross-country running. Instrumental teaching is provided for a fee. Children support a different charity each year and in 2001 this was St Francis House Hospice for Children. The school is a popular choice with parents and the Reception class is oversubscribed by 25% in a typical year.
